Bangs Trimming Can You Relate??

Can you relate to the above?? When were your bangs cut like these!

Yesterday my wife updated her Facebook status using the card featured above with the accompanying tag  “almost every woman I know who grew up in the 1950’s-1960’s can relate to this one lol” So the questions before house today is, was this phenomena restricted to the 50s and 60s or is bangs’ trimming   still going on today!! Did it go on in days before the 50s!

Zoe Provides a Recovery Day!

Oliver provides the Workout and Zoe the Recovery – Yin and Yang Once More!

If babysitting Oliver is the workout, then babysitting Zoe is the recovery day!! About the only part of my body that got a good workout yesterday were my fingers. They were chewed on by Miss Zoe most of the day! They were preferred over the teething rings! When I got there Zoe was asleep, Melissa said she would probably wake up about 9:30 and she would be ready to eat again at sometime between 10:30 and 11:00, sounded good to me! So I set up the laptop and got to work and occasionally checked on her. The checking became more regular as she was still asleep when 9:30 came around, She was still asleep at 10:00 and at 10:30 now I was worrying, but she was still moving around, so logically I knew she was ok. At about 10:50 or so I was texting with my wife she asked when Zoe was supposed to eat, I said about  five minutes ago,- LOL! Anyway we both thought that her stomach would have her waking soon! Our thoughts were borne out when she awoke a few minutes later, and Kathy wished good luck.

An Active Day with Oliver!!

Oliver makes babysitting a workout!!

So my last two days have been spent with my two favorite little people! Tuesday was spent with grandson Oliver and today with granddaughter Zoe. Since I am writing about them  tonight may give you an idea which day was more tiring!!  I must say though that my tiredness on Tuesday was increased by the traffic on 295 which caused Andrew to arrive home about a half hour late.

Anyway, Tuesday’s babysitting day did not start very well When I arrived Oliver got down from the couch and went to his playroom and brought me two books, that was the highpoint of the first hour! After that, Mr Oliver proceeded to melt down and cry hysterically for his mom. I tried several things but nothing seemed to work. I could get him calm for a few seconds and then it was back to hysteria! But through it, he wanted me to pick him up!! Anyway, I finally got him calmed down and a heartbroken mom snuck out the front door. After mom left, Oliver was for the most part calm and the day proceeded as normal, All that crying tired the young man out and soon after his morning bottle he conked out for about an hour and a half!

Oliver and Zoe – Our Yin and Yang

A Fun Day with Yang Grandson Oliver

I am a strong believer in the duality of both nature and the human spirit, The yin and the yang, light and dark, male and female, Narcissus and Goldmund,, the active and the passive, Can you see where I’m going with this?? If you check, the post prior to this one is about our passive grandchild Zoe.Yesterday was spent babysitting  our more active grandchild Oliver. Included in the  description of yin and yang  at Wikipedia is:the following…..

…Yin and yang can be thought of as complementary (rather than opposing) forces that interact to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the assembled parts. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, (for instance shadow cannot exist without light). Either of the two major aspects may manifest more strongly in a particular object, depending on the criterion of the observation. The yin yang shows a balance between two opposites with a little bit in each. Read More

Granddad Babysits a Cranky Zoe – not!

So yesterday I babysat my five month old granddaughter Zoe. I watched her from 12:30 until my son Peter got home around 5 o’clock. When I first got to their apartment, my daughter-in-law Melissa was holding, said Zoe was a cranky baby, who wouldn’t nap! So I thought I was going to be in for a tough afternoon with a cranky baby!! After Missy left I laid Zoe down on her playmate and much to my surprise she did not  fuss and cry. Instead she laid there and played very nicely!!

SZoe lounging!Shortly after laying her down I took this picture and tweeted it to my wife…. Her response was “LOL she doesn’t look cranky to me” and she wasn’t! I read to her for a bit,  then we watched “Baby Einstein on the Farm” and “Wheels on the bus” and before long it was two o’clock and time for her bottle. I still don’t have this bottle thing down, four kids and it took me until I was 63 to give a child a bottle! Anyway, Zoe drank about 2/3 of the bottle and then fell asleep. She stayed asleep until after 4:30.When she got up, I read to her again and she sat and played  with some toys, – by herself! Before long Dad was home and granddad was on his way home!!

The Schultüte and Thoughts of Dresden

Schultüte – the traditional German School Cone

Sometime last week my wife came across some of my old family pictures and gave them to me to put away One  was a picture of my father’s mother Charlotte Frieda MeyerCharlotte Meyer Report Card. In the picture she is holding a cone that is almost as long as she is tall. So my wife set out to find out, what the cone was.

What she discovered is the cone is called a “Schultüte” (or School Cone). The word “Tute” actually translate more literally as “bag”. In Eastern Germany it is often called a Zuckertute, a sugar bag! The cone was originally made of paper and more recently plastic,

Changes in the Karn Christmas Traditions!

Merry Christmas Morning to All! I hope everyone has a wonderful day today!! For the first time in 35 plus years Christmas morning will not be spent in our house! But I do believe that will be more than made up for by the presence of Oliver Edward and Zoe Isabella. This Christmas morning will be spent at son Andrew and Meaghan’s home. The other difference will be that Elizabeth will not be the first to open here presents, that honor will go to the youngest Ms. Zoe!!

My other fear is that young Oliver did not get a glimpse of Santa last nigh putting out his family’s presents and heaven forbid that he saw mommy kissing Santa!!

Dad watches proudly as Elizabeth runs her first 10K!! Yes, our Elizabeth!!

Cross-posted from EKKarn’s Explorations

A month or so ago our daughter Elizabeth surprised her mother and I, when she told us that on November 8th we had to go with her to Trenton, where she would be running a 10K!  It surprised us because she has never been athletic. She enjoys and follows sports, but never played any, or even showed any inclination to do so. When she had to run the mile in gym in high school, she mostly walked! Her brother Andrew ran cross-country as  did I, and I also continue to run, but not Elizabeth. This running surprise comes after we were surprised at her graduation party for receiving her Master’s Degree from the University of Delaware, At the party,  we were told by her friend, that Elizabeth is awesome when she works out with weights at the gym. Our Elizabeth???

Exploring the Joys of Grandparenthood! Halloween’s made fun again!

So after many years of being an irrelevant holiday, my grandchildren made Halloween relevant today!! Oliver and his mom Meaghan visited my wife and I at my wife’s workplace today (Riverside schools) and then Zoe and her parents had dinner with us tonight!!

I love music of all kinds,
but there’s no greater music
than the sound of my grandchildren laughing;
my kids, too.

Sylvia Earle

Oliver-St Bernard

Hum, the music from Oliver appears to be the blues…..
“Why oh Why, did they dress me like this!”
“I said, why, oh, why did they dress me like this….

Evening thoughts : “Navajo Rug” – Grandson Oliver and his Great-Grandparents Clarke!

So I just finished a four mile run, when actually maybe a one mile jog to almost fast walk, I hate the hot weather! Anyway, after I  was finished, I collapsed in my chair here in front of the computer and almost fell asleep, I did manage to get up and take a shower. As I was getting out of the shower I was trying to think of what to eat, something maybe quick and light and  decided on a fried egg sandwich. That  means two eggs on toast….., which in turn leads my mind to “Well, it’s two eggs up on whiskey toast……” and Jerry Jeff ….
